Sulphur Oxidizing Bacteria and Pulse Nutrition - A Review

چکیده
Sulphur oxidizers are involved in oxidation of elemental sulphur to plant available sulphate. Sulphur is the key element for higher pulse production and plays an important role in the formation of proteins, vitamins and enzymes. Sulphur is a constituent of the essential amino acids cystine, cysteine and methionine. In the recent years the importance of sulphur in pulse nutrition has been well recognized because of the widespread occurrence of its deficiency in the soil world over. Majority of sulphur taken up by plant roots is in the form of sulphate (SO ), which undergoes a series of transformation prior to its incorporation into the original 4 compounds. The soil microbial biomass is the key driving force behind all sulphur transformations. The biomass acts as both a source and sink for inorganic sulphate. They make available sulphate from element or any reduced forms of sulphur, through oxidation process in the soil. The role of chemolithotrophic bacteria of the genus Thiobacillus in this process is usually emphasized. Use of sulphur oxidizers enhance the natural oxidation and speed up the production of sulphates.

Hydrogen Oxidizing Bacteria as Poly(hydroxybutyrate) Producers
Batch culture of Ralstonia eutropha using the recycled gas closed circuit culture system was conducted in order to develop a practical fermentation system for industrial autotrophic culture for poly (hydroxybutrate) production. The gas phase of the culture system consisted of substrate gas so that gases in this culture could be recycled as long as the amount of the gas consumed would be repleni...
متن کاملCharacteristics of Sulfobacillus acidophilus sp. nov. and other moderately thermophilic mineral-sulphide-oxidizing bacteria.
Several isolates of Gram-positive, acidophilic, moderately thermophilic, ferrous-iron- and mineral-sulphide-oxidizing bacteria were examined to establish unequivocally the characteristics of Sulfobacillus-like bacteria. Two species were evident: Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans with 48-50 mol% G+C and Sulfobacillus acidophilus sp. nov. with 55-57 mol% G+C. Both species grew autotrophically an...

In purple sulphur bacteria of the family Chromatiaceae sulphite oxidation via intermediary formation of adenylylsulphate is an enzymologically well characterized process. In contrast, the role of an alternative direct oxidation pathway via the enzyme sulphite:acceptor oxidoreductase has not been resolved. This paper reports the cloning of the genes encoding the adenylylsulphate-forming enzyme a...

Concrete durability as an important engineering property of concrete, determining the service life of concrete structures very significantly, can be threatened and even lost due to the interactions of concrete with external environment. Bio-corrosion process caused by presence and activities of microorganisms producing sulphuric acid is a special type of sulphate deterioration of concrete mater...
متن کاملThe role of soil microbes in plant sulphur nutrition.
Chemical and spectroscopic studies have shown that in agricultural soils most of the soil sulphur (>95%) is present as sulphate esters or as carbon-bonded sulphur (sulphonates or amino acid sulphur), rather than inorganic sulphate. Plant sulphur nutrition depends primarily on the uptake of inorganic sulphate. However, recent research has demonstrated that the sulphate ester and sulphonate-pools...
